Do you have a nipping puppy? One easy treatment is to turn your back to her. She is most likely nipping to get you attention and to play. Teach her that will get her no attention. This association shouldn't take long for her to put together.
You should also teach bite inhibition to stop the nipping and teach that your puppies teeth should never bite down on flesh. Contact me to set up some training to learn more on bite inhibition or any other puppy problems you may be having.

So I'm sure at some point your dog realized it is fun to jump on your guests. Have you been able to make it stop? The biggest tip I can give you is to remember, a dog is usually jumping to get your attention. That being said, you should also know that like a child, if a dog does something for attention, as long as he gets attention it does not matter whether or not it is positive attention. So even if you are pushing him off and saying,"No, don't jump' he has gotten your attention. Instead, if he jumps turn your back on him and cross your arms. usually after a few times of you taking your attention away from him, he will realize jumping = NO attention. It's how he should associate jumping to attention. Give it a try!

With the hot weather coming, you should learn summer safety, and know the signs of heatstroke. Dogs only sweat on small glands on the pads of their feet, so they pant to keep themselves cool.
Heatstroke is an emergency and your dog needs to be treated by a vet asap. Before you get them to the vet you can try to cool them off by wetting them with cool, NOT COLD water and circulate the air with a fan. Most commonly:
To prevent heatstroke: - Make sure if your dog is outside, he has access to shade and water at all times. - Restrict exercise - Avoid places like the beach or asphalt areas where the heat is reflected and there is no shade. - Do not muzzle your dog. - Provide a cool area or area with AC. Create a cool area for your dog if there isn't one. Put some ice and water in ziplock baggies, then wrap in towels or tube socks for your dog to lay on. You know should know his name well. it should be taught as a command. It should mean, when I say your name, pay attention to me.
Start by saying your dog's name. If he looks at you or comes to you give him a treat. If he does not pay attention to you, put a treat in his face as if to say, you could of had this! Then do it again. Usually if he doesn't give you his attention the first time, he will catch on quickly. It may only take 3 or four tries for him to realize he will get a treat when you say his name and he gives you his attention. Practice this daily for a while. Be aware of which "human foods" are dangerous for your dog and make sure your guests know the rules too. If you are having a BBQ make sure your dog is kept at a safe distance from the hot grill and remember that party food is not for pets - make sure you keep food and drink out of paw’s reach. Kebab skewers, alcohol, corn on the cob and bones, especially chicken and small bones are particularly dangerous BBQ hazards for your pet. I know I have talked about allergies a little already, but it is important to be aware and pay attention in case of a reaction. I had a pitbull, Gucci, who broke out in hives in the middle of the night. After the hives he developed an allergic reaction to wheat. So I changed his food to grain free. He was 5 when this happened. So just like people, dogs and cats can develop allergies to plants, pollens, grasses, and many other substances in springtime or at anytime in their life. Even if your dog has never had allergies before, one day he might have a reaction. Allergies in pets normally appear as itchy skin and ear problems, may also have hair loss or inflamed skin. Some pets will even change their behavior due to irritation. Some will suffer respiratory symptoms or runny eyes. Gucci had little round ring like irritations on his belly. He would scratch at them, so with approval from my vet, I applied hyrocortisone cream to help the itch. And, please develop a relationship with a local vet and know where the closest 24 hour Animal Hospital is.
Do not overdo it. Increase the length of your walks gradually to build up your pet’s fitness. Avoid heat stroke, which can be fatal. Be aware of the temperature and do not walk your dog in the heat of the day. Ensure your pet has access to shade and plenty of fresh clean water. DO NOT leave your dog in the car for even a minute on a sunny day. At 75 degrees farenheit, dogs in hot cars begin to pant excessively within 2 minutes and can die in less than 15 minutes. |
